- Please feel free to copy this diskette and distribute it to
- anyone interested in managing local area networks.
-
- OVERVIEW
-
- The demonstration programs on this diskette are special
- versions of the actual NETmanager and NETremote products.
- With them you can:
-
- o View the screen of any networked PC from your desk
-
- o Control any networked PCs centrally
-
- o Automatically track time spent on user support
-
- o Manage PC configuration information
-
- Instructions contained within this file describe exactly how
- to use this demonstration software. It would be most
- convenient if you print out this file now so that you can
- follow along as you execute the demonstration.
-
-
- SOFTWARE ENVIRONMENT
-
- NETmanager and NETremote programs (and this demonstration
- software) require either a Novell IPX or a NETBIOS interface
- for operation. Such interfaces are provided by Novell
- NetWare, IBM PC LAN Program, 3Com 3Plus, AT&T Starlan and
- Ungermann-Bass NET/One Personal Connection networks.
-
- The software on this diskette is specifically designed for
- NETBIOS networks (e.g., 3Com 3Plus, IBM Network Program, AT&T
- STARLAN, Ungermann-Bass NET/ONE). If you are using Novell
- NETWARE please call Brightwork for the correct diskette.
-
- CONFIGURATION
-
- To try out the demonstration software, you will need a minimum
- of two PCs connected to a network. You must run the
-
- - 2 -
-
- demonstration programs directly from the Demonstration
- diskette in your A: drive.
-
- GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH NETremote
-
- Brightwork Software's NETremote and NETmanager programs
- provide new and unique capabilities. You'll find it useful to
- experiment to get a full sense of how they can help you. We
- suggest you get started by trying the NETremote product first.
-
- 1) Select two PCs which are collocated and connected to
- your local area network.
-
- 2) Designate one PC as the LISTENING-PC and the other as
- the CALLING-PC. This terminology (i.e. LISTENING-PC and
- CALLING-PC) is used throughout the remainder of this
- demonstration. Boot the two PCs and log them into your
- network.
-
- For IBM's Token-Ring LAN, you must start the IBM PC LAN
- program before continuing with this demonstration.
-
- For 3Com 3Plus, you must have 3COM version 1.2 or later and
- have the full function NETBIOS loaded on each PC.
-
- For Ungermann-Bass NET/One personal connection, you must start
- the MS-NET software on each PC.
-
- For AT&T STARLAN, you must run the client software on each PC
- before continuing.
-
- 3) At the LISTENING-PC, place the Demonstration diskette in
- drive A:. Type the following command to load the LISTEN
- program:
-
- A:LISTDEMO <ENTER>
-
- 4) The LISTEN program displays the following message:
-
- NETremote Demo Version 1.20 Serial number NR1
- (C) Copyright Brightwork Software, Inc. 1986, 1987
-
- Network type: NETBIOS
-
- Enter the listening-name:
-
- At the prompt, type "demo" in lower case characters. This is
- the NETBIOS name that you will use to contact this PC on your
- network. LISTDEMO will respond:
-
- Checking listen-name . . .
- NRLISTEN loaded. Waiting for a call.
-
- The LISTDEMO program "listens" for calls from NETremote and
- NETmanager.
-
- - 3 -
-
-
- 5) Invoke the LISTEN program a second time to display
- status information. At the LISTENING-PC, type:
-
- A:LISTDEMO <ENTER>
-
- The LISTEN program will display a status message and the
- values of all the LISTEN program parameters, similar to the
- display shown below. They are automatically set to reasonable
- default values.
-
- NETremote Demo Version 1.20 Serial number NR1
- (C) Copyright Brightwork Software, Inc. 1986, 1987
-
- Network type: NETBIOS
-
- NRLISTEN STATUS: loaded.
- RESIDENT VERSION: 1.20
- CALL STATE: Waiting for call
- LAST CALLER: *** none ***
- PASSWORD: Not required
- LISTENER'S KEYBOARD: ON
- CALLER'S KEYBOARD: ON
- FAST MODE: ON
- NOTIFY: ON
- ACCESS: ON
- ALLOW REBOOT: ON
-
- 6) Go to the CALLING-PC and insert the demo diskette into
- drive A:. Load the CALL program by typing:
-
- A:CALLDEMO <ENTER>
-
- 7) It prints the following message, prompting you to enter
- the name of the PC you wish to call.
-
- NETremote Demo Version 1.20 Serial number NR2
- (C) Copyright Brightwork Software, Inc. 1986, 1987
-
- Enter the LISTENING-PC to call:
-
- At the prompt, you should type "demo", which is the
- listening-name of the PC you wish to contact.
-
- 8) When the connection is established, you will hear a
- rising tone on the LISTENING-PC. The CALLING-PC screen will
- now look like the screen on the LISTENING-PC (e.g. the
- CALLING-PC will display the status message from the LISTEN
- program). You now have about five minutes of "connect time"
- to experiment with NETremote. Once you exceed the allotted
- time, your call will automatically hangup, and you will have
- to reboot the LISTENING-PC and reload LISTDEMO to try the
- demonstration software again.
-
- If you are unable to get a connection, check the following
-
- - 4 -
-
- things:
-
- o Did you type "demo" in lower case characters on both
- the LISTENING-PC and the CALLING-PC?.
-
- o Are you entering the correct name for the
- LISTENING-PC? Check the name you entered on the
- LISTENING-PC.
-
- If you have a CGA monitor on the LISTENING-PC, you will
- experience snow on the screen with the default demonstration
- configuration. To prevent snow, load the LISTDEMO program with
- the /FAST=OFF option on the command line.
-
- To continue with the demonstration, enter the DOS directory
- command at the keyboard of the CALLING-PC keyboard by typing:
-
- DIR <ENTER>
-
- The LISTENING-PC's directory will be displayed on both
- screens. Experiment with other DOS commands using both
- keyboards to confirm that the CALLING-PC is contacting the
- LISTENING-PC.
-
- 9) At the CALLING-PC, type the F1 function key. This
- presents a menu similar to the following:
-
- Send F1
- Hang up call to "DEMO"
- Call another PC
- Reboot the LISTENING-PC
- Turn FAST mode on
- Do nothing
-
- Select an item in this menu by positioning the cursor using
- the UP and DOWN arrow keys and activate a selected item by
- typing <ENTER>. To return to the active call without doing
- anything, type ESC or select "Do nothing" in the function
- menu.
-
- 10) When you are done with the call to the LISTENING-PC,
- type the F1 function key at the CALLING-PC keyboard and select
- the hang up option using the arrow keys and <ENTER>. This
- terminates the call and returns you to DOS. You will hear a
- falling tone on the LISTENING-PC. This completes the
- NETremote demonstration. You may wish to experiment further
- with NETremote. Consult the NETremote command line options
- section at the end of this file.
-
-
- GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH NETmanager
-
- Now that you're familiar with NETremote, let's give the
- NETmanager program a spin. NETmanager was designed to help
- LAN managers support users. It does what NETremote can do
-
- - 5 -
-
- plus a whole lot more. If you followed the NETremote tutorial
- above, you've already loaded the LISTENING-PC with the
- demonstration software. If not, execute steps 1 through 4
- above before proceeding further.
-
- For this tutorial, imagine you've just received a telephone
- call from a user who is having a problem saving files in
- Multimate.
-
- 11) To run NETmanager, you must have at least 20 file
- handles available. To provide for 20 file handles, make sure
- that you have a line in your CONFIG.SYS file on the CALLING-PC
- that reads:
-
- FILES = 20
-
- If the CALLING-PC does not have such an entry in the
- CONFIG.SYS file, enter one and reboot the CALLING-PC to
- activate it.
-
- Next, re-insert the demo diskette into drive A:. Make drive
- A: the active drive by typing:
-
- A: <ENTER>
-
- Then, load the NETmanager program by typing:
-
- MANDEMO <ENTER>
-
- You should now see the NETmanager startup screen. A pictorial
- version of a network packet moves between two PCs during the
- registration process. Following registration, the Main Menu
- is displayed.
-
- All NETmanager services are accessed from the Main Menu. You
- highlight desired options using the up and down arrow keys and
- select an option with the ENTER key. Use the ESC key to
- return to a previous menu or abandon what you are
- doing. Let's start by re-calling the LISTENING-PC.
-
- 12) Since "Control a PC" is already highlighted, pressing
- ENTER displays a list of listening names. Use the arrow keys
- to select the name DEMO and press ENTER. You should now be
- reconnected to the LISTENING-PC.
-
- NOTE: The demonstration permits a total of 5 minutes
- connect time to the LISTENING-PC. If time runs out,
- the LISTENING-PC will hangup. Reboot the LISTENING-PC
- and reload LISTDEMO to re-establish a connection.
-
- 13) When you've finished calling the LISTENING-PC, press F1
- ( function key 1 ) to see the active call menu. For now,
- select "Hang up and log the call" and press ENTER. The Call
-
- - 6 -
-
- Logging form is displayed. This form allows you to record
- information about the support call you just placed.
-
- 14) Enter your name as the person taking the problem.
- Then, select "Multimate" from the Problem type list and press _
- ENTER. The Problem type list disappears and the cursor enters _
- the "Notes:" field. You can type in notes about the call.
- Enter "Forgot how to save files in Multimate."
-
- Other fields allow you to record the status of the trouble and
- the duration. Later we will use this information to generate
- a report.
-
- 15) Press F10 to log the call. Pressing F10 causes the
- information on the Call Logging form to be written to the Log
- Database on the A: drive.
-
- NOTE: The demonstration version of NETmanager only
- allows you to log ten calls. If you've logged ten
- calls and wish to try logging calls again, delete the
- file NM2 LOG.DBF from the demo disk and restart _
- NETmanager. Answer 'Y' when NETmanager asks if you
- wish to create a log database.
-
- 16) Press ESC to return to the Main Menu.
-
- 17) Using the arrow keys, select "Print Reports" and press
- ENTER. The Report Type menu is displayed.
-
- 18) Press ENTER to select "Detailed Trouble Ticket
- Report." The Report Criteria form is displayed. You use this
- form to select log entries to be included in your report. For
- now...
-
- 19) Press F10 to display the report on your PC's screen.
- You may wish to generate other types of reports.
-
- This concludes the NETmanager demonstration. Feel free to
- continue exploring NETmanager's features. You may wish to
- test other NETmanager options available through the Main Menu:
-
- "Administer"
-
- Selecting this item allows you to customize NETmanager. You
- may wish to experiment by changing various options. For
- example, changing the User Label: Department to Division
- will cause the label to be changed throughout NETmanager
- and on the reports generated by NETmanager. Also, you could
- try modifying the colors used to paint NETmanager's screens.
-
- "Edit databases"
-
- This item permits you to modify the three NETmanager
- databases. You can add, delete, or edit records in the various
-
-
- - 7 -
-
- databases. Pressing DEL deletes a record, INS inserts a new
- record, ENTER lets you view or modify a record already in the
- database.
-
- "Use DOS"
-
- This option let's you "escape" to DOS without leaving
- NETmanager. In the actual product, you would typically start
- NETmanager and then select this option to return to DOS to do
- work on your PC. When a support problem arises, you "exit" to
- NETmanager for quick access to NETmanager's support features.
-
- NOTE: If you booted your PC from the A: drive and your
- demo disk doesn't have a COMMAND.COM file you will
- receive an error message. You can correct this by
- copying COMMAND.COM to the demonstration disk.
